Cognitive Restructuring and Social Anxiety
Cognitive Restructuring and Social Anxiety Social Anxiety Disorder Treatment and Therapy Print Understanding Cognitive Restructuring Core Part of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy By Arlin Cuncic Arlin Cuncic, MA, is the author of Therapy in Focus: What to Expect from CBT for Social Anxiety Disorder and 7 Weeks to Reduce Anxiety. Learn about our editorial policy Arlin Cuncic Updated on November 16, 2018 Pixelfit/Getty Images More in Social Anxiety Disorder Treatment and Therapy Social Skills Symptoms Diagnosis Coping Work and School Related Conditions Cognitive restructuring is an essential part of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT, an intensive form of therapy that requires significant effort on the part of the patient with assistance from a therapist, is considered to be one of the most effective treatment options for mental disorders like social anxiety disorder (SAD). What Is Cognitive Restructuring? Cognitive restructuring is a CBT technique that involves identifying and disputing irrational thoughts and negative automatic thoughts. It draws on several different methods such as thought recording, disputation, and guided questioning. The goal of cognitive restructuring is to replace anxiety-inducing thoughts with more rational and positive ones to reduce anxiety. The theory behind cognitive restructuring is that negative thoughts can be reformulated through practice. This process involves testing ideas for their accuracy and questioning if they are reality or just your own mistaken perception. Does Cognitive Restructuring Help Social Anxiety Disorder? The results of a 2016 study suggested that cognitive restructuring may positively impact social anxiety in the short-term, not because of changes in the perceived accuracy of negative thoughts, but rather simply due to exposure to a feared situation. This suggests that its not so much replacing negative thoughts that is important, but rather going into situations and gradually having anxiety lessen. However, a 2014 study showed that post-event processing (PEP) was reduced after cognitive restructuring. PEP refers to the ruminative thoughts that you have after a social situation, such as I screwed it all up or Everyone saw how nervous I was. This seems to indicate that changes in thinking are important for anxiety reduction. While we dont know the precise reason cognitive restructuring has an effect, it is likely a combination of these factors: thinking more rationally, facing situations that scare you, and engaging in less ruminative afterthoughts. Each of these aspects will strengthen each other in a positive cycle. How to Practice Cognitive Restructuring On Your Own Cognitive restructuring is an intensive process. It is usually recommended that you work with a therapist who specializes in both social anxiety and cognitive behavioral therapy. However, while its true that you should generally practice cognitive restructuring under the guidance of a trained therapist, you can also get started with some self-help techniques. Below are some tips on how to start practicing cognitive restructuring in your everyday life. There are several steps to cognitive restructuring: Record: Record your thoughts in a journal, including all negative thoughts you have about yourself or self-limiting ideas. Also, note the situation at hand: was it a large party with people you didnt know? Or, was it a public presentation in front of coworkers? Write down the implications of how you felt. If you were convinced you were going to fail, did that make you more nervous or did you refuse to attend the event?Analyze: With the help of your therapist, review the notes you have written to determine if certain patterns exist. You may find that you are okay in work settings, but get anxious at parties where you dont know anyone. It might be that public speaking scares you, but not mingling with strangers. Analyzing these triggers can help you and your therapist create a strategy to combat your unique form of social anxiety.Dispute: Review the thoughts about yourself and critique them for accuracy. If you wrote down I always fail at everything, think about times when you did su cceed in your social or professional life. Identify a few examples, and disprove the thought that you wrote down.Replace: Replace those disproven negative thoughts with accurate and positive affirmations. Instead of I always screw up, replace that thought with Im a very strong researcher or Im a great listener. Tips for Using Cognitive Restructuring Below are some additional tips to make the most of cognitive restructuring. Its best to be in a calm state of mind when doing this process. If you are still anxious from a situation, take some time to calm yourself by using techniques such as deep breathing or meditation. Use a self-help book specifically designed to help you implement CBT techniques. Most of these books will include a worksheet to help you practice cognitive restructuring. Monitor yourself for negative automatic thoughts in the future and replace them with the positive affirmations that you created. Practicing mindfulness meditation can be helpful to learn how to detach yourself from your thoughts or to let them go without fighting against them. It can be used alongside cognitive restructuring as a helpful tool. A Word From Verywell Cognitive restructuring is not an easy skill to learn, even with the help of a healthcare provider. Particularly if you have social anxiety, you likely have spent years thinking negatively about yourself, worsening your anxiety and nervousness. However, cognitive restructuring does get easier with practice. Continue working on it for your different fears with the help of your therapist or doctor. Over time, cognitive restructuring and cognitive behavioral therapy can have a significant impact on your social anxiety. Underlying your negative thoughts is a core belief about yourself and your ability to function in social and performance situations. Once your thoughts and actions are significantly changed, your core beliefs will also eventually shift.

Essay about Stop Global Warming Now! - 1242 Words
When thinking about global warming, what comes to mind as the cause? Pollution? Deforestation? Well, my thought is: who creates pollution? Who cuts down all these trees? Who uses fossil fuels? Humans. I donââ¬â¢t believe people are the sole cause, but we are tremendously involved in creating the cause. And really, itââ¬â¢s not so much humans as it is the dramatic increase in population since 1950. In 1950, the population was about 2.5 billion people on this great earth. In 2009ââ¬âjust 59 years later, there are almost 6.8 billion people roaming this globe. And that number continues to grow. By 2050, an estimated 9.3 billion people will call our planet home. My outlook on this serious issue can be construed as dark, glum, or heartless, but I believeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦There can never be enough food. There can never be enough televisions or books or clothes. So we have to make more. Resulting in pollution from factories, the loss of fossil fuels used to power those factories, and the trees needed to print those books. And whatââ¬â¢s so sad, is that that cycle never ends. And if our population continues to grow at this alarming pace, it can only get worse. Itââ¬â¢s hard for people to hear, and very hard for myself to say, but death is necessary. Disease is necessary. Murder is necessary. Extinction is necessary. These things must happen to keep the population of any species in check. And Iââ¬â¢m not saying to go kill off billions of people to stop this quick demise of humanity. And it may sound cruel and almost ridiculous, but let the diseased, the dying, and the starving die. You see, the problem is, as humans, we care too much. We have too many emotions tied into others that our vision on reality can easily be blurred. Natural selection is real and it is necessary in every aspect of life, especially in containing global warming. Because more people equal more pollution. More paper needed. More poverty. More disease. More unemployment. More homeless. More staving. But we canââ¬â¢t fix everythingâ⬠¦ yet we try. We feed the starving; we medicate the dying to hold them off for a few, to satisfy our own need to care for someone other than ourselves, for our own greed for popularity and reputation. The Beautiful Country of Tanzania Free Essays
The United Republic of Tanzania is located in Southeast Africa. The country includes the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba. Tanzania is a beautiful country with lovely beaches, mountains, national parks, and people. We will write a custom essay sample on The Beautiful Country of Tanzania or any similar topic only for you Order Now This is also the country where you can find Tanzanite, a dazzling blue stone that is astonishing everyone in the world one at a time. Arabs from Oman, who settled in Zanzibar in the 7th century A. D, first founded Tanzania. In the beginning of the 19th century, British and German explorers visited the mainland of Tanzania. The British then took over the country. After World War 1 was over, British rule came to and, but they were not given back their independence. After World War 2, they finally were granted independence and complete freedom from Britain. In 1954, Julius K. Nyerere made the Tanganyika National Union, which became the dominate political party. 1964, Neyerere proposed that Tanganyika and Zanzibar should merge into a single republic within the British Commonwealth. In 1964, the union changed their name to Tanzania, which we now know it as today. But within this, what it seems like, perfect country, there is an extreme issue that is causing problems with energy consumption, Biomass. Biomass is a renewable resource that can be cultivated by man, or grow wild. It is natures ââ¬Å"store houseâ⬠of solar energy and chemical resources. Ninety-two percent of energy used up in Tanzania comes from Biomass. Because of the lack of market mechanisms in the rural areas, and the result of imbalances in supply and demand, people are forced to use up all Biomass resources. This problem is especially growing in some urban areas, and if demand is met from natural forests in the peri-urban areas, a serious local deforestation may result. Also at the same time, open brush fires and wood clearing for non-energy needs are by far responsible for deforestation in the country. Forests are cleared for reasons which people think are good, but when they do this, it is really hurting them. When they ruin the forests for reasons such as agriculture, shelter, firewood, and many other reasons, people are forced to use other Biomass resources such as animal waste in rural households because the increasing depletion of wood. This can not go on forever and someone must find a solution to this. To enhance the Biomass resource, there is a need for ââ¬Å"a holistic supply management approach which recognizes the competing uses of landâ⬠, which was said by a household energy speaker. Tanzania is presently trying to ensure enough supply and efficient use of energy throughout the country. This is known as ââ¬Å"The Energy Policy of Tanzaniaâ⬠. The policies goal is to reconcile the need to ensure continuity and security of energy supply on one hand and the need to reduce the burden on the economy of energy imports on the other. This will include an approach that recognizes the competing uses of land. The main strategy would be to enhance the management of the existing resource base, and combine the growing of multi-purpose trees with other agricultural activities. This should show that fuelwood is just one of the many products that come out of the agricultural system. The policy also calls for the development of more appropriate land management practices and betters woodfuel technologies. Other goals are to get rid of hydroelectric sources, develop and use natural gas resources, and step up petroleum exploration activities. The people of Tanzania are going to be doing everything possible to improve the use of energy. If the situation there does not change, bad things are going to happen. Homes in Tanzania take in more energy then some businesses. If this does not change, pretty soon there will barely be enough energy for lights to work. After energy is consumed properly, life will be a lot easier for people to in Tanzania to live. How to cite The Beautiful Country of Tanzania, Essay examples

Jefferson Notes on the State of Virginia and Race Essay Example
Jefferson Notes on the State of Virginia and Race Essay Thomas Jefferson, a man who penned the words, All men are created equal, was a slave owner. To many, this is an inconceivable contradictiona hypocritical blasphemy against truth. However, Jefferson was ultimately a man of his times, mired in the social and political climate of his daya day, when slavery was a simple, if not repugnant, fact of life. But how, exactly, did Jefferson feel about racial difference and the justification of slaveryThe answer can be clearly found in his work, At the time of its writing, Jeffersons Notes was an important diplomatic document.Jefferson knew that the country desperately needed to have the support of various European nations if it was to successfully break free from the grasp of Great Britain. However, he worried that the image of the United States would be tarnished if the notion that its Indians had been conquered and enslaved. For this reason, he wrote, An inhuman practice once prevailed in this country of making slaves of the Indians. (This practic e commenced with the Spaniards with thefirst discovery of America).(61)Thus, Jefferson was keenly resolute in denying that the United States was responsible for enslaving American Indiansand he not only vigorously denied this fact, but shifted the blame onto the original Spanish explorers. However, this begs the questionwhat of the black slavesthe very ones he kept on his plantationTo Jefferson, the answer was clear. Not only was the situation and position of black slaves different, but it was far more dangerous to the survival of the country Indeed, Jefferson not only justifies the continuation of the institution of slavery in his writing, but he refers to a doom scenario, where, were slaves to be freed, the cumulative injustices infl
